Announcing Our New Failed Back Syndrome Clinic


Dr. Masson is establishing a special clinic for Failed Back Surgery Syndrome. Please contact us and request a review for this special clinic. It does not require a referral, but does require recent MRIs, all X-rays, and a copy of the Operative Report.


Dr. Masson's surgical protocol, iMAS, was originally developed to treat the intricacies of failed lumbar spine surgery. Classic and traditional spine surgery treatment methods allow for midline decompression via laminectomy, and sometimes reconstruction and stabilization with failure of decompression of the lateral recess of the posterior hardware and of the fusion. Often in these complex situations, the simple conclusion that the patient has 'scar tissue' or that the patient must live with the pain, may not necessarily be the case. In the absence of major nerve damage, many if not most of these patients, benefit from either removal of hardware, extension of the decompression to include the lateral recess or foramen, and occasionally repair of a failed fusion. When these strategies fail, spinal cord stimulation or morphine pumps can frequently considerably improve the extent of the pain, and reduce the dependency on oral narcotics.


Using the iMAS protocol, all phases of re-operation can be done using microsurgery, image guidance, and minimally invasive techniques and most cases can be done with less than an hour in surgery and a two-day hospital stay. The average incision length is less than an inch and no blood needs to be donated.
